It also eats berries and sunflower seeds. They can be distinguished from hairy woodpeckers by their black-spotted white tail feathers and a shorter bill. The downy woodpecker uses its bill to drill into trees and dig out insects like beetles, wasps, moths and insect larvae. The smallest of North Americas woodpeckers, downy woodpeckers are mainly black and white, with adult males having a red patch on the back of the head. The downy woodpecker lives in woodlands, parks and yards. Range The downy woodpecker can be found throughout most of the United States and Canada except for Hawaii, the Southwest and northern Alaska and Canada. It has a white chest and back, black wings with white spots, a black tail and a black head with a white "mustache" and white "eyebrows." The male has a red patch on the back of its head.
